Interactive against fake news & cyberbullying

The interactive scavenger hunt for Saferinternet.at is a standalone, web-based chat system that helps young people learn how to use various parts of the internet safely. The quiz poses questions, gives tasks, and guides users to various locations on the Saferinternet website or elsewhere on the web. Interaction works just like a chat app on a smartphone. A correct answer leads to the next task, while an incorrect answer provides hints. Due to its great success, the range of digital learning materials was expanded in 2025 with two more playful solutions: a swipe system and another chat system that educators can customize to help children recognize fake news.

Process

Task

The aim was to create the possibility of developing various simple quizzes in the form of chat simulations – as well as, in a further development, interactive games with swipe and touch functions. These simulations are primarily intended to encourage children to interact, thus educating them about the dangers of the internet in a playful way.

Solution

For these projects, we opted for a web app with a flexible backend solution that allows customers to independently create any number of quizzes and games. They have full control over the content – from the questions to the visual elements they wish to include. A user-friendly administration area, specifically designed for authorized Saferinternet users, is available in the background. Interactive scavenger hunts can be easily created, edited, and managed there. The area also provides access to an anonymized leaderboard that clearly displays progress and results. Teachers can create games for any number of classes and play them within each class, using their own leaderboards. Both the scavenger hunt and the games are generated automatically and can be easily shared via a link – whether by email, WhatsApp, or social media. This makes the experience simple and accessible for both creators and participants.

Success Story

From the very beginning, it was clear: with Bytewood, we had found the right partner for our project. Our goal was to playfully help children and young people learn how to deal with misinformation online – especially now, with deepfakes and disinformation proliferating dramatically thanks to generative AI. With the web game "FightFakes," we want to foster a gut feeling for truth and deception – because a traditional fact check is often unrealistic in everyday life. That's why it was so important for us to develop a tool that empowers young people, rather than limiting them. Bytewood took our ideas seriously, understood the requirements of the education sector, and translated them into a solution that perfectly suited us – even without us being able to predefine all the technical details. Communication was seamless, and the result speaks for itself.

We wanted a tool to help young people better recognize fake news online – and Bytewood made exactly that possible. Our ideas were understood and implemented without much discussion.
