Phobia Virtual Reality
Virtual reality offers the possibility of placing people with phobias in a simulated environment and confronting them directly with their fears. With PhobiusVR, we create VR worlds that are specifically used in modern therapy for anxiety disorders. Whether it's claustrophobia, arachnophobia, or fear of flying – this innovative project supports numerous people on their journey to overcoming their fears. The team at Phobius, Vienna's leading phobia center, is considered a pioneer in the field of anxiety management. Using state-of-the-art virtual reality technology, they enable patients to confront their fears in a safe and controlled environment. This method has proven extremely effective and helps many sufferers lead better lives. It's an inspiring example of how technology can be used meaningfully to positively transform people's lives.
Process
Task
A realistic virtual environment should be created where patients have the opportunity to confront their fears in a safe setting. The following environments should be virtually implemented: claustrophobia (MRI room), fear of blood and needles, and fear of public speaking.

Solution
Using VR glasses connected to a PC proved to be the best solution. This allowed the project, aimed at helping as many people as possible overcome their fears, to be developed in close collaboration between Phobius and Bytewood, ensuring it is both scientifically and technologically state-of-the-art. For the realistic and interactive environment, we relied on the Unreal Engine with interactive 3D objects. We also provided psychologists with the necessary tools to customize their virtual reality sessions for each patient. For example, spiders can appear smaller and farther away, or larger and closer, depending on the psychologist's settings.
