Stonehenge Explorer

In the real-time simulation "Stonehenge Explorer," you take on the role of an archaeologist, helping to survey the excavation site on a real quad bike according to scientific criteria and – with a bit of luck – even unearthing prehistoric finds from the Neolithic period. But beware: your work could be hindered by cows, bulls, sheep, and even new modes of transport like cars – then you'll need to dodge them!

Process

Task

In 2016, as one of Bytewood's first projects, an interactive exhibition about Stonehenge and the groundbreaking achievements of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection (LBI ArchPro) was planned for the MAMUZ Museum. Bytewood was commissioned to present the process of modern archaeological information gathering in a playful and easily understandable way. The goal was to offer visitors an insight into the cutting-edge technologies and methods of archaeological prospection—from geophysical measurements to the digital reconstruction of hidden structures. Interactive elements and visual presentations were designed to make the complex workflows tangible for visitors of all ages.

Solution

As part of the project, an interactive installation was developed that allowed visitors to playfully step into the role of archaeologists. The same equipment used at Stonehenge was available for this purpose: a converted quad bike. Visitors could sit on it and simulate non-invasive excavations, just like those carried out by professional archaeologists. To make the experience even more immersive, additional elements created a unique atmosphere: A 5.1 surround sound system delivered realistic soundscapes, while an integrated mechanism released the scent of fresh grass. A projector displayed the game in real time on the wall in front of the participants, creating a visual connection to the surroundings. Interactive elements such as sheep and a white bull, which periodically appeared, provided entertaining distractions and additional challenges within the game. This combination of realistic equipment, playful simulation and multisensory effects made the project a unique experience that both informed and entertained visitors.
