VBC Plant Tour Virtual Reality
In this project, a virtual plant tour was implemented as a virtual reality application for Vogelbusch Biocommodities GmbH. Users could move freely within the plant and quickly switch between different areas thanks to intuitive controls and a smart ladder system. An interactive map also allowed users to teleport to specific locations within the plant. This application made it possible to virtually tour and experience the entire plant from anywhere in the world.
Process
Task
Starting in 2018, a plant from Asia was to be virtually prepared for trade fair exhibitions in Europe to make it accessible to visitors. The particular challenge lay in the plant's extremely large footprint and the many intricate and highly detailed components, which had to be represented precisely and realistically. A solution was to be developed that would guarantee both the plant's area coverage and its level of detail while simultaneously offering high performance. The goal was to create a smooth and immersive experience that would present the plant impressively and realistically, enabling trade fair visitors to gain a deep understanding of its technology and structure.

Solution
For this project, we opted for a PC-based solution with a wired VR headset to create an impressive and smooth virtual reality experience. To simplify navigation, teleportation arrows were integrated, allowing users to move precisely and effortlessly to specific locations. An interactive map was also incorporated, enabling users to quickly navigate to desired locations within the virtual space. Thanks to occlusion culling, pre-rendering, and baked textures, we were able to implement a technically efficient and visually stunning virtual reality representation of such a large plant at an early stage of development – and all without any stuttering. The VR application was presented at ACHEMA, the world forum and leading international trade fair for the process industry. There, visitors were able to experience the plants and technologies of Vogelbusch Biocommodities GmbH interactively, without having to be physically present at the actual facility. The virtual environment was a great success at the trade fair, captivating the audience with its combination of innovation, interactivity, and technical precision.
